About the play

Written as a monologue and directed by Michel Pascal, with Eva Hernandez as Therese, "Story of a Soul" has already been performed more than 450 times and seen by 80,000 people around the world.

Based on Therese's own writings it recounts her life from childhood to the Carmelite Monastery. She speaks to us today, inviting us to discover inner peace, joy and faith, in our restless world. There are no great speeches with Therese, just utter simplicity and openness that touches us to the core, disturbing our complacency.
A woman, so ordinary, yet so extra...ordinary. Describing herself as a brave warrior, she showed exceptional determination in becoming the youngest Carmelite in France, overcoming huge obstacles to fulfill her vocation . In Carmel she surrendered herself in total humility to God, radiating love for each member of her community .

Aged 24, she developed a debilitating and terminal illness, enduring a real "way of the cross", paved by doubt. Her trust shone through the suffering ,enabling her to write a few days before her death, "I am not dying, I am entering life".

Therese puts us back on the right track when we fall off the rails with her "little way". A little way particularly suitable for our time which needs such a universal spirituality of simple confidence and love.

Therese is brought to life by Eva Hernandez in a striking portrayal along with a gallery of characters- her family, the Pope, her Carmelite sisters... all conveyed by a change of inflection, a laugh, a tear...... We see Therese develop from a petulant young girl to the undaunted warrior proclaiming an outstanding spiritual message to us today.
